X-Scale 1/144 EC-24A
By Matt Bittner
Overview
The latest from X-Scale is another deriviatve of their DC-8 series, this time the one-off USN electronic warfare aircraft, the EC-24A. According to Wikipedia:
"A single former United Airlines DC-8-54 (F) was used by the United States Navy as an electronic warfare training platform. It was retired in October 1998 and is now in storage with the 309th Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Group."
We have provided First Looks on the first two DC-8s X-Scale has released: the -32 and the -53 so refer to those articles for general box contents. In addition, Chris has built the -53 and you can see his results in his build article.
The Kit
The X-Scale 1/144 EC-24A consists of 165 pieces of green-colored injected plastic along with a clear, plastic injected sprue with the cockpit canopy and two landing lights for the nose landing gear. Also included is a set of masks for the clear canopy, wheels and the nose landing lights. Decals are only for the single EC-24A and appear to be in register and include the fuselage side windows, which are not in injected plastic.
Please refer to the prior articles linked above to see what the contents are in the majority of the DC-8 kits. Know that X-Scale not only provides all the lumps, bumps and antennas for this specific aircraft, but also created a new fuselage so those lumps, bumps and antennas can be added.
Definitely refer to Chris' article on how this kit builds and what to look out for.
Conclusion
X-Scale continues their DC-8 releases releasing this very unique version. It will definitely look good when placed next to other electronic warfare aircraft such as the Roden EC-135s. I am looking forward to working on this model.
Huge thanks to X-Scale for the review kit.
