Model Craft Jeweller's Hammer
By Chris Banyai-Riepl
Overview
Sometimes, when all other tools fail, bring in the hammer. While one might think that wouldn't apply to scale modeling, it does. If for nothing else, a good hammer is great for adding 'battle damage' to that one model that just doesn't work out any other way. The need is there, but the question is, what hammer to get?
The Hammer
While a 10lb sledge hammer can solve a surprising number of fit problems in a model, it really is not the precision tool we need in the scale world. A more useful one is this Multi End Jeweller's Hammer, from Model Craft. This hammer is small enough for precision work, so you can work in confined spaces. As one can guess from the name, this hammer comes with several different ends. There is a round ball end and a rounded cone end, both of which would be great for shaping metal around molds. There is a chisel head, but the three remaining heads are probably the most useful: steel, brass, and clear plastic flat heads. Switching these around will give the modeler a great deal of flexibility for different materials.
So, in all seriousness, what would this hammer be good for in scale modeling? While one could use it to create custom parts from brass and aluminum sheet, the most useful bit for this would be in combination with a set of punches, for example the Waldron sets. These need a soft touch, and this hammer works absolutely perfectly for this. Using the softer clear acrylic head will also protect the heads of the punches.
Conclusion
While more of a niche tool, if you have a set of punches, this is an excellent hammer to have. It's inexpensive, yet has enough options to cover a wide variety of uses. Our thanks to Billing Boats USA for the review sample.
