Because of the push to bring the Hurricane and Spitfire to the fore-front of British WW2 fighter development, the Whirlwind was not used as much as those two designs. Even though there were almost 200 put into production development stopped on hte Whirlwind when the push to the prior mentioned fighters was given higher priority. It wasn't that bad of an aircraft, it just happened to be "not as good" as the Hurricane and Spitfire in the fighter role. However, because of the nose guns it was made into a fighter-bomber for a short time before it was replaced with newer aircraft.
The book is broken up into the following chapters:
- Technical Description
- Evolution - Prototype, Production and Projected Variants
- Camouflage & Markings
- Production
There are also the following Appendices:
- Kit List
- Accessory List
- Decal List
- Bibliography
If you have any inkling to build a Whirlwind in any scale, then this is the perfect book to pick up. Not only is the developmental history first rate, but there is also an excellent section on markings and camouflage.
Many thanks to Valiant Wings for supplying this book to review.
