USN and USMC Aircraft 1911-1919 Volume 1 and Volume 2
By Matt Bittner
Curtiss Part 1
Author: Colin Owers
Publisher: Aeronaut Books
ISBN: 978-1-953201-82-9
Binding: Softcover
Pages: 269
Here's how the book is broken out:
- Introduction
- Chapter 1. Glenn Curtiss, the USN, & Aircraft at Sea
- Chapter 2. Curtiss Pusher & Hydroaeroplanes
- Chapter 3. Curtiss Model E & F Flying Boats
- Chapter 4. Curtiss R Types
- Bibliography
It's fitting the first volumes in this series are dedicated to Curtiss as they were the first ones to help develop US Naval Aviation. In Volume 1, you'll find the introduction to Curtiss and his early designs, as well as the first production aircraft.
It's evident throughout this title that the first Curtiss aircraft were definitely fragile things. The smallest misstep in flying could result in disastrous outcomes for both the aircraft and pilot/passengers.
This book is very detailed in its narrative and also includes a few color profiles and scale drawings.
Curtiss Part 2
Author: Colin Owers
Publisher: Aeronaut Books
ISBN: 978-1-953201-83-6
Binding: Softcover
Pages: 265
Part 2 is broken out this way:
- Introduction
- Chapter 1. Curtiss N-9 Floatplane
- Chapter 2. Curtiss HS-1L & HS-2L Flying Boats
- Bibliography
This second part of the Curtiss book series deals with the more produced aircraft, noted above. These were important types for the time frame, the N-9 "saving" the USN training program and the HS-1/2 taking the fight to the German submarines during WWI.
As with Part 1, Part 2 is very detailed in its analysis of these two important USN/USMC aircraft and as with the first book, there are scale drawings and more color profiles in Part 2, allowing the modeler to build and finish any of these two important aircraft.
I definitely thankĀ Aeronaut Books for sending these books for review. Contact them direct for ordering information.
