As a companion to their Oriental Adventures book, Aeronaut Books continue their foray into the French Air Force operating in other areas of the world during World War I. This time the area is what would be considered the "Eastern Front" and "Africa", etc.
The book is broken out thusly:
Chapters
- French Flyers in Italy 1915-1918
- French Flyers in Russia 1914-1919
- French Military Mission in Romania 1916-1918
- Against Red Hungary and Russia; French Missions in Czechoslovakia and Poland (1919)
- Colonial Fronts
As with the Oriental Adventures book, a lot was learned about the French Air Force in other parts of the world during World War I. Unlike that area, though, most of these units were kept relatively up to date with the latest aircraft, minus the units in Africa. Sure, there were still Sopwith Strutters and Dorand ARs flying, but supplanted with plenty of Nieuports and SPADs.
As with all of the French books put out by Aeronaut Books this also has numerous photos of aircraft along with plenty of color profiles. Quite a lot to whet the modeling appetite. Now if only we could start seeing new-tool models of some of the aircraft (I would really like a new 1/72 Dorand AR.1) as well as decals to match these profiles. I now have another favorite Escadrille N 561 out of Italy. A lot of unique markings on their Nieuports.
Huge, HUGE thanks to Aeronaut Books for this to review. Contact them direct for ordering information.
