When Wingnut Wings first came out, World War One modeling got a huge shot in the arm. Here were highly detailed and very complete model kits that were state of the art. Interest was high, even with modelers not used to building biplane kits. While the initial releases were great, many were more interested in the upcoming releases, especially the Gotha G.IV bomber. Now that the big Gotha is out, and priced very affordably, big scale modelers are once again flocking to Wingnut Wings.
The good folks at Albatros Publications have been just as excited about the Wingnut kits as the general modeling population, and as such several of those kits have been featured in Windsock International. The Gotha, though, warranted a bit more than a regular build article, so they put together an entire book on the subject. This book is broken down into several sections, starting with an operational overview and followed by a technical description of the airframe. After this is a short in-the-box overview of what you get with your Wingnut Wings Gotha.
Of course, the majority of the book details the build of the Wingnut Wings Gotha, and this is a very thorough build review. This takes you through the Gotha step by step, breaking the construction down into twenty-five sections. While the Wingnut Wings kit is quite detailed out of the box, there are some areas that could use an extra bit of detail, and this book covers those areas as well. Finally, there is a short summary of other Gotha kits, should you wish to go beyond the G.IV.
If you have bought, or are planning to buy, the Wingnut Wings Gotha kit, this book is good enough to almost be a required co-purchase. Coupled with the usual well-detailed instruction book, this book will provide you with everything you could want to finish your Gotha. My thanks to Albatros Publications for the review copy.
