Starfighter Decals 1/72 USN at Coral Sea
By Matt Bittner
Some of the newest sheets coming from Starfighter Decals has been for multiple aircraft that flew during a specific point in time. This time it's for United States Navy (USN) aircraft that flew during the Battle of Coral Sea, from 4 to 8 May, 1942. There are three specific aircraft covered, the F4F-3 Wildcat, the TBD-1 Devastator, and the SBD-3 Dauntless. For models, Starfighter recommends both the easier to find Hasegawa Wildcat (using aftermarket correction and enhancement pieces) as well as the Admirial/AZ Models F4F-3 for the Wildcat; the difficult-to-find Hasegawa SBD-3 for the Dauntless; and the Airfix TBD-1 for the Devastator. The following markings are provided:
F4F-3:
- F-2, Bu.No. 2531, VF-42, 8 May 1942
- F-14, Bu.No. Unknown, VF-42, 8 May 1942
- F-1, Bu.No. 4031, VF-2, May 1942
SBD-3:
- S-12, Bu.No. 4690, VS-2, May 1942
- S-8, Bu.No. 4537, VS-2, May 1942
- S-11, Bu.No. 4531, VS-1, May 1942
- S-10, Bu.No. 4690, VS-5, May 19422-S-12, Bu.No. 4690, VS-2, May 1942 (Promotional Photo)
TBD-1:
- T-1, Bu.No. 0285, VT-2, May 1942
- Bu.No. 0319, VT-5, May 1942
All aircraft are finished in Blue Gray uppers with Light Gray undersides. The instructions are very comprehensive and supplies a lot of notes per aircraft, along with overall notes per aircraft-type. Decals are printed by Cartograf, so you can be sure of their highly quality and being in register. Colors are very sharp.
If you want to finish your model as one of the aircraft that flew during the Battle of Coral Sea, then you'll definitely want this set of decals. With the high-quality associated with Cartograf you can be assured your model will look great, using these decals.
Huge thanks to Starfighter Decals for the review sample.
