Keeping with their trend of supplying aftermarket for older kits, Starfighter Decals has released this set of decals, meant for the Monogram/Revell re-release of the 1/72 F-82 Twin Mustang.  There are two F-82s catered for:

  • F-82E, 46-297, 27th Fighter Escort Group, Kearney AFB, NE, 1948 (Left in natural metal)
  • F-82F, 46-433, 2nd Fighter Squadron (All Weather), Mitchell AFB, NE, 1949 (Painted overall in black)

Naturally people are going to wonder if this sheet will work for the recently released Special Hobby kit.  My suspicions are the Kearney bird will, but only if you paint the wing- and fin-tips red/white/blue, instead of using the provided decals.  Everything else for this particular aircraft are numbers, stars-and-bars, etc., so they should work on the Special Hobby kit.

However, for the Mitchell bird, I don't think the decals will work, specifically the decals covering the entire rudder/fin, and those that are meant for the wing-tips.  If you were masochist you could separate the silver stars – and stripes - on those pieces of decal from the rest, and place those individually over a blue background, but you're in for a lot of work.  If it wasn't for those specific decals the rest could work, since again it's just "numbers and insignia".

Not only do you get all the decals for the aircraft, but there are also stencil decals included.  There are enough decals on the sheet for both aircraft.  Excellent if you want to build both.  Maybe build the Special Hobby kit as the bird from Kearney, NE, and the Monogram/Revell kit as the one from New York.  At least that's something I would like to do.

Thanks to Starfighter Decals for the review set.
