Print Scale 1/72 Hannover Cl.II Decals
By Matt Bittner
While there isn't a dedicated kit to the Hannover Cl.II in 1/72, it's not difficult to modify the venerable Airfix Hannover Cl.IIIa kit. It appears the fuselage is slightly longer, along with the wings, and the tail struttage is different. Whether you perform these corrections or not is entirely up to you. This set of decals from Print Scale for the Hannover Cl.II contains the following aircraft:
- Hannover CL.II C.9276/17 Schusta 27b Tactical ‘5'
- Hannover CL.II C.9237/17
- Hannover CL.II C.9301/17 Schusta 12, Tactical ‘01' Romann & Winkler
- Hannover CL.II C.9226/17, FA(A) 209, Lt. Hennen & Lt. Gunther Wolff
- Hannover CL.II C.9339/17 Tactical ‘5'
- Hannover CL.II C.13199/17 March 1918
- Hannover CL.II C.13181/17 FA(A) 226, Tactical ‘K’ Vzfw. Willy Engler and Lt. Alfred Kuemann
- Hannover CL.II C.13080/17
- Hannover CL.II C.9365/17 FA(A) 208, Tactical ‘3'
- Hannover CL.II C.13189/17 FA(A) 287b
- Hannover CL.II C.9252/17, FA(A) 209, flown by Vzfw. Borstell & Lt. Wolff
- Hannover CL.II C.9232/17 Schlasta 12, Tactical ‘5' Right side
You'll need to source your own lozenge decals as Print Scale does not supply them with this release (although they do have their own) but you'll also need "larger" lozenge for the fuselage, as those were typically painted on at the factory, then oversprayed in a different color. What I would do is use the 1/48 lozenge decals on the fuselage (and the top of the wing center-section) and then do the overspray prior to adding the rest of the decals.
It's too bad there isn't a kit of the Cl.II (or more up-to-date kit for the Cl.III for that matter) in the one true scale. There are still unfortunate gaps in the 1/72 modeling world when it comes to WWI aircraft.
There are three excellent references for the Hannover series of aircraft. The two-volume set from Albatros Productions and the single volume on Hannover aircraft from Aeronaut Books.
My thanks to Print Scale for allowing me to review this set of decals.
