Print Scale 1/72 American F-86 Sabre Decals
By Matt Bittner
Unfortunately an F-86E doesn't exist without modification in 1/72, the biggest problem being the wing (all of the 1/72 kits include the broad-chord "6-3" wing while the F-86E wing was narrow). This is a shame as a good portion of the type the U.S. used in the Korean war was the F-86E. However, an F-86F is easier to obtain as the recently-released Airfix kit fills that niche nicely. Five of the markings on this Print Scale release are for F-86Es, the other four F-86Fs. The following aircraft are covered:
- F-86E-1-NA 50-623 ‘Pretty Mary’ of the 335th FIS / 4th FIW flown by Col. Harrison R. Thyng
- F-86E-10-NA 51-2738 ‘Father Dan’ 25th FIS / 51st FIW flown by 2nd Lt. Sam P. Young
- F-86F-10-NA 51-12958 ‘The Paper Tiger’ of the 39th FIS / 51st FIW flown by Capt. Harold E. Fischer
- F-86F-30-NA 52-4584 ‘MiG Mad Marine’ of the 25th FIS / 51st FIW flown by Maj. John Glenn
- F-86E-10-NA 51-2822 ‘The King’ of the 336th FIS / 4th FIW flown by Col. Royal Newman Baker
- F-86E-10-NA 51-2767 ‘The Chopper’ of the 336th FIS / 4th FIW flown by Major Felix Asla
- F-86F-30-NA 52-4427 ‘The Old Man’ of the 8th FBG flown by Col. Walter Benz, Group C.O
- F-86F-30-NA 52-4341 ‘Mig Poison’ of the 67th FBS / 18th FBG flown by Maj. James Hagerstom
- F-86E-10-NA 51-2834 ’Jolley Roger’ of the 335th FIS / 4th FIW flown by Capt. Cliff Jolley
Not only are the markings for the aircraft covered, but there is also a nice selection of stencils. Colors look very nice and the decals appear to be in register.
My thanks to Print Scale for sending this review set.
