Print Scale 1/72 AEG C.IV
By Matt Bittner
In an unusual twist, Print Scale has released decals for an aircraft that is currently not in production by any model company. There were kits made of the AEG C.IV in the past, and might be found in the secondary market, but nothing is being produced, currently. Even so, the following airframes are catered for with this set:
- AEG C.IV v.R C.7123/17, No CWL 5.3 9th Reconnaissance Squadron, Krakow-Rakowice Airport
- AEG C.1042/16, may have been the AEG C.IV n/N.I prototype. It was sprayed in a two-color camouflage, probably in the typical green and mauve
- AEG C.IV, 6623/16, nevertheless was the ancestor of the AEG N.I and the AEG J.I and J.II. This one is in standard factory sprayed camouflage finish with the black unit marking of Schutzstaffel 6 in 1916
- AEG C.IV C. 6590/16
- AEG C.IV C. 4762/17 German Air Force, 1917
- AEG C.IV trainer in postwar Netherlands service
- AEG C.IV . 6674/16 of Schusta 27
There were a few 1/72 AEG C.IVs produced in the past: Lüdemann-Modellbau resin; Ardpol resin; Joystick Models vac; and Formaplane vac.
Note that while Print Scale shows a light-blue underside, they also could have been left clear-doped linen. However, since there is no certainty with colors of the AEG C.IVs, the final finish is left to the modeler. The Fokker-built AEG C.IVs were finished in the typical Fokker streaky-olive scheme, to which it would appear the Netherlands trainer was.
The two best references for the AEG C.IV is the out-of-print Datafile No.67 by Albatros Productions, and AEG Aircraft of WWI still available from Aeronaut Books.
My thanks go to Print Scale for sending these decals to review.
