Overview

After a long stretch of only having a couple options for 1/32 Bf 109Es (the old Matchbox kit and the older Hasegawa kit), we now have a huge range of new-tool Messerschmitts to choose from. Eduard's line of Bf 109Es is one of the more popular, and this latest set is aimed at adding new levels of detail to that kit in the form of a complete engine.

The Parts

When it comes to resin, quality can run the gamut of sublime to sub-par. Often times, what looks great in the box turns into a nightmare when trying to fit it into the suggested kit. Eduard has chosen a new technology method of employing computer-aided modeling and milling for these masters, matching them up to the similarly designed plastic kit parts. The result is what is very likely the best fitting resin parts in the industry, with a quality that sets the standard for other manufacturers to strive towards.

While highly detailed, the actual assembly is fairly minimal. The main engine body is one piece and really needs to be seen to be believed. The crispness and consistency of detailing is simply superb, from the individual bolt heads to the exhaust gaskets. There is a separate front piece and a separate rear piece that adds all the accessories and provides the prop shaft. With the basic assembly done, the rest is just a matter of adding in all the remaining plumbing along the sides and between the cylinder banks.

In addition to the quality resin, there are two frets of photoetch providing more details. The smaller fret contains such details as plumbing tie-downs for the engine bearer arm, supercharger grill, and cowling latches. The larger photoetch fret provides parts for the "Free Bonus", which provides photoetch tools to go along with the resin tool case. These include a bunch of wrenches and a handful of nuts. These will be a great addition to a diorama setting.

While this set is designed for the Eduard Bf 109, there still is a bit of work needed to the kit to make it fit perfectly. There is a small bit of grinding needed on the forward lower cowl, where the bulges are placed to make room for the front edge of the cylinder rows. This is a simple job, just take care to not rub through the outside. This update includes a nicely done upper cowl, featuring both petite exterior and interior detailing while simultaneously being extremely thin.

Conclusion

This is easily one of the best resin sets I have ever seen, and I am really looking forward to seeing what Eduard produces next in their growing Brassin range. Whether built for use in a kit or as a standalone engine, this is undoubtedly the best representation of the DB 601A/N engine in 1/32.  My thanks to Eduard for the review sample.
