Eduard 1/48 Bf109E-1 Photo Etch
By Jacob Russell
This new set from Eduard (item number 48720) is for their recently released Bf109E-1 kit. It consists of approximately 69 unpainted pieces on a single photo-etched fret. It's quite a comprehensive set. The cockpit gets new rudder pedals, a throttle quadrant, trim wheels, canopy release lever, 2 types of canopy mirror, oxygen bottle cover, an aft storage access door, a new map case, etc. The engine receives a new supercharger impeller(?), detail for the engine bearer support arms, etc.
The rest of the parts are distributed over the airframe and include new wheel well liners, drop tank strap (the drop tank installation was introduced with the E-7 variant but was retrofitted to earlier airframes), a new supercharger intake, and oleo scissors and brake lines for the landing gear. Additional items are new exit doors for the underwing radiators, aileron hinges, and inner detail and hinges for the gun and engine covers.
I think this is an excellent set but I'm mystified by the absence of an upgraded instrument panel, especially given that one is included with both the Bf109E “Weekend” photo-etch set (item number 49651) and in the new Brassin Bf109E interior (to be reviewed here shortly).
This new set adds superior detail all over the Bf109E airframe. It is perfect for the Weekend kits-just get the above referenced set for the instrument panel, too! My favorite parts are the new supercharger intake, the oxygen bottle cover, and the wheel well liners, their detail is stunning. I recommend the use of good p/e folding tools and the Optivisor to get the best results from this set. I recommend this set and I would like to thank Eduard for providing the review sample.
