Click2detail 1/144 MiG-25 Exhausts
By Matt Bittner
While some may consider 3D printing to still be in its infancy, there are companies that are using the technology to generate things from aftermarket parts all the way to full kits. While the technology still has its limitations - depending on the material being used to print, the surface can come out pretty rough - it's still a technology that has its uses. There are some companies that use providers such as Shapeways to print out entire kits (especially in 1/144) while other have their own printers. It's all still a learning curve but there are some that have it figured out.
Click2detail is one of those companies. While you can see there's still some some texture to the surface, these 1/144 MiG-25 exhausts are definitely state-of-the-art. The level of detail on these is just phenomenal and far surpass anything any kit can provide. Looking at the photo of the kit exhausts versus the Click2detail replacements it's extremely obvious just how poor the kit exhausts are.
I'm still trying to figure out how, or if, the texture on the parts can be decreased. Maybe a dip in Future to even it all out? Whatever is decided it needs to be thin so it doesn't hide all the excellent detail. Then everything will need to be painted and it's time to study real MiG-25 exhaust pictures.
The only kit in 1/144 still worth tracking down of the MiG-25 is the LS kit (reboxed, no doubt, by others). It's an excellent kit and when coupled not only with these exhausts but also with RetroWings cockpit you'll have a superb 1/144 MiG-25 model.
Huge, HUGE thanks to Click2detail for providing these exhausts for review. Now I'll need to start my LS MiG-25.
