CTA 1/72 RF-4B of VMFP-3 Decals
By Matt Bittner
Marine Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron 3 (VMFP-3) was a reconnaissance squadron that operated between 1975 and 1990 that only flew McDonnell Douglas RF-4B during their entire time of existence. They were deployed on USS Midway from 1975 through 1984 and after disbandment the squadron's duties were taken over by F/A-18Ds of various VMFAs.
The first release that was sent to us by CTA are 1/72 decals for these RF-4Bs. There are three aircraft contained in this release:
- Bu.No. 153095, RF 117, January 1984, USS Midway/MCAS El Toro (Light Gost Grey undersides, Dark Ghust Grey sides and Medium Grey undersides)
- Bu.No. 153108, RF 120, July 1981, NAF Atsugi/USS Midway (Light Gull Grey overall with a Medium Grey tail)
- Bu.No. 151983, RF 118, August 1981, MCAS Iwakumi/USS Midway (Light Gull Gray overall)
For all aircraft the instructions have a port profile, as well as top and bottom profiles. RF 117 also includes a starboard profile but the other two do not. Decals appear to be very nice and appear to be register.
A welcome addition of decals to the "Phantom Phamily" and if you're wondering what kits are available both Fujimi and Hasegawa both have 1/72 RF-4Bs in their inventory. Just remember not to add any external stores to your models as these aircraft were completely "weapon free".
Many thanks to CTA for providing this set to review.
