Zvezda 1/72 Russian Cavalry
By Don Barry
Kit # 6161
MSRP: $5.39 USD
This kit consists of two small sprues, approximately 2 ½” by 5”, molded in glossy dark green styrene. Each of the two figures consists of two pieces, as do both the horses. They are pegged to snap together, as is the extra equipment for each figure. The surface detail on the horses and riders is excellent, to say the least. Facial expressions, straps, buckles, and the musculature of the horses are painstakingly reproduced in near perfect detail. There is not the faintest evidence of flash, nor ejector pin marks or sink holes. The mold seams are very faint, the only difficulty will be in removing them without marring the surrounding detail. To this reviewer, perhaps the most impressive features are the cavalry sabers. Both figures exhibit drawn, upraised sabers. The blades are in scale, delicately curved, finely pointed, and flash free. There is no knock-out button to mar the tips either. Extra equipment is molded separately, and consists of a one piece casting including a carbine, entrenching tool, and shoulder bag with strap and buckle. These also snap fit to the figures. Since the horses are running, each sprue includes a textured base for the horse to lock into.
These figures are part of a gaming system, called “Art of Tactic”. In addition to the horses and riders, the box includes a unit base with flag, and a unit card. There is also a web address for contact and further information. I have no experience with the gaming aspects, but from a modeling aspect, these figures are exquisite. I would like to see what other cavalry sets might be available, as they were widely engaged during the early stages of World War 2.This reviewer rates highly recommended as a modeling subject. My thanks to Dragon USA for providing my sample kit.
