Eduard 1/35 US Spring Camo Netting 1940-1960
By Chris Banyai-Riepl
Overview
Camouflage netting is a great accessory for models, whether rolled up or deployed. Creating them has been a challenge, though, as getting the colors and variations of canvas sections is difficult and tedious. Newer styles of camouflage netting is even more challenging, as those canvas sections are smaller and more numerous. Eduard has answered the call for simple camouflage netting, though, with a series of photoetch netting.
The Set
Eduard has already tackled the modern camouflage netting and now, with this set, has turned to the style used between 1940 and 1960. This set is finished in the spring colors, which consists of three shades of green. The netting itself is another color, and the underside features different shades for the canvas pieces. Like the other photoetch camouflage netting Eduard has released, this one will be easiest to display rolled up on a vehicle, as it doesn't drape like actual netting. With some careful tweaking, though, one could make it drape over a structure without too much trouble.
There are a couple small downsides. First up, there is a glossy sheen to the netting, but this is easy to fix with a bit of flat coat. The second issue might be more challenging to fix, but that said, I'm not sure if it is an issue or not. I confess I am not an expert on camouflage netting, but it would seem to me that there should be an edge to the netting. This set has the netting run off the end, resulting in dozens of cord ends. This might not be a concern when rolled up, but could be a challenge for those wanting to lay out the netting in a diorama.
Conclusion
This is a very useful aftermarket set, one with many uses. Given the separate sets with alternate color schemes and different types, Eduard has provided a great supply of netting for the armor modeler. Personally, I would love to see Eduard expand this line with 1/72 versions, and I know others would like to see these in 1/48. My thanks to Eduard for the review sample.
