Hauler 1/72 Deutz OMZ 122f Diesel Locomotive
By Jacob Russell
The Deutz OMZ 122f locomotive was built by Humboldt-Deutz in Cologne, Germany between 1932 and 1942. It was primarily used for shunting railroad cars around the yard or along sidings. The OMZ 122f was a simple design: it lacked compressed air brakes, was powered by a 40 hp motor started by compressed air, had a manual transmission and a top speed of 17.5 km per hour. One pair of wheels were driven directly and the second pair via a coupling rod.
The Model
Hauler's new multi media kit comes in a small, end opening box. It consists of 29 parts. 14 of these are resin, there are 14 photo etch parts on a small fret and a sheet of acetate for the cab windows. The resin parts are superbly detailed with a separate engine, transmission, chassis, hood, cabin, axles, etc. The parts have well located casting blocks and they will be easy to remove.
A great addition to this kit is a base with a pair of railroad tracks complete with a switch - tailor made for a diorama or the base of your contest entry. The photo etch parts include the cab control levers, Deutz logos for both sides of the cab, the grill and side panels for the hood, various grab handles, etc. Hauler's instructions are well illustrated with a logical build sequence. Color choices are simple: Light Green, Grey or Blue cab and hood, Red or Black chassis.
Conclusion
Hauler continues to mine a rich vein of obscure modeling subjects. The Internet yielded very little information about this locomotive. The Deutz OMZ 122f is a well thought out and engineered kit and I think it will be a fun build. I would like to thank Hauler for the review sample.
