Supercharged for higher altitudes.
The J2M was developed and designed by Jiro Horikoshi, creator of the celebrated A6M Zero. The high-altitude J2M5 variant featured an 1,820 hp (1,357 kW) MK4U-A Kasei 26a engine with mechanical supercharger, twin 20 mm Type 99 Model II cannons in the wings and twin 20 mm Type 99 cannons in the fuselage. Only forty-three J2M5s were produced.

1/48 A-7E Corsair II “Hellenic Air Force Special”
Greece’s second-oldest squadron.
The Hellenic Air Force’s 336th Bomber Squadron is the HAF’s second-oldest squadron – and it’s the world’s only squadron that’s still flying the A-7E Corsair II. (At least, they’re still flying it until October 2014, when they transition to the latest fighters.) Thanks to Hasegawa, you can recreate the HAF’s special A-7E Corsair II from the 2014 Royal International Air Tattoo!

1/48 F-4EJ Kai Phantom II “Sea Camouflage”
Disguised for aquatic action.
Built by Mitsubishi®, the F-4EJ Kai was delivered to the JASDF in November 1989. It featured updated electronics, including an improved central computer, AN/APG-66J pulse Doppler radar and the J/APR-6 homing and warning system. Many were also equipped with ASM-1 or ASM-2 anti-ship missiles mounted underneath the aircraft’s wings. As this 1/48 scale model demonstrates, several F-4EJ Kai Phantom IIs also sport special sea camouflage for aquatic action.

A sneak peek into future flights.
The MV-22B Osprey has defied convention from day one. Although it flies like a heli, the Osprey cruises with the speed and range of a turboprop plane. While the JGSDF doesn’t currently have Ospreys in its fleet, they are expected to be added within the next year for maritime roles. It is estimated that Japan will have a total of seventeen Ospreys by 2019.

Fangs of the desert snake
In Israeli service, the American-made “Cobra” was renamed the “Viper”. No matter what name it flew under, however, you didn’t want to be on the receiving end of its bite. A stunning array of 70mm rockets, 20mm cannon shells, and TOW missiles were available for deployment against any and all threats. Though Israel moved to using the AH-64 Apache in 2013, it was the Viper that kept Israel’s borders safe for much of the past thirty years.

Originally designed in the fifties as strategic (nuclear) bombers, the Skywarrior rapidly shifted to the electronic warfare and refueling role when the US Navy diverted its nuclear deterrent to the submarine fleet. The Skywarrior was one of the largest and heaviest aircraft ever operated from carrier decks. The Mitsubishi F-2A combines the latest technology from Japan and the United States to create a state-of-the-art fighter for the 21st century. The JASDF currently has 61 F-2As in its fleet, which are often referred to as “Viper Zero” by pilots. In 2014, select F-2As were painted with a special livery in honor of the JASDF’s 60th anniversary.

Fans of Leiji Matsumoto’s mangas and anime films are aware of his affinity for World War II aircraft. Nowhere is this more apparent than in Matsumoto’s “The Cockpit,” which features several WWII aircraft, including the Messerschmitt Bf 109 and the Mitsubishi G4M1. His enthusiasm for WWII isn’t limited to the printed page – “The Cockpit”was adapted as an anime in 1993.

Egg Plane Space Shuttle Orbiter and B747
Returning to roost
Moving the space shuttle is one jumbo task, fortunately, the eggheads of Boeing hatched the B747—one of the largest commercial aircraft ever to spread its wings. The bigger birds made dozens of flights yoked together with the shuttles. Had the shuttles scrambled on their own, they would have risked frying their engines or cracking flight surfaces. After the space shuttle program was put on the shelf, the 747s ovoided their due date by serving the shuttles to their final roosting places.
