Camouflage & Markings of Imperial Japanese Navy Bombers in WWII Model Art Special No. 406 Model Art Co. Ltd, 2-8-3 Iidabashi, Chiyodaku, Tokyo 102 Japan 162ppReviewed by Chris Banyai-Riepl If you don't have much in the way of research material on WWII Japanese aircraft, the Model Art Specials are a great way to get started. I picked this title up a couple months ago for around $20, and it is a great introduction to a large section of Japanese aviation: the Navy bombers. The first part of the book features some very well done color profile illustrations, followed by a section of color marking layouts. Both of these are very nice, but the neatest part is the next section, which features actual color chips of Japanese Navy colors, including the interior ones. This is very nice for the modeler who is just getting into modeling Japanese aviation, as the colors can be quite confusing. Unfortunately, all of the text is Japanese, so it becomes somewhat difficult to decipher which color is what. The rest of the book is devoted to lots of black and white photos and drawings, giving you a brief primer on Naval markings, and then delving deeper and showing a nice selection of pictures and drawings on specific planes. Everything from the G4M1 to the M6A1 to the P1Y1 is in here, from single engined D3A1s to the four-engined G8N1. Jets make an appearance as well, with a section on the "Kikka", as do the suicide planes such as the "Ohka". The pictures more than make up for the lack of Enlish text, and I can highly recommend this and any other of the Model Art Specials. | |
