Eduard's 1/72nd Scale Nieuport 23 'Dual Combo'

By Michael Kendix

In the Box

An earlier edition of Internet Modeler (December 2006) provided a full build-up review of Eduard’s 1/72nd scale Nieuport 17. This kit contains the same plastic sprues, though of course, there are two of each, plus photoetch parts, masks, and decals for four Nieuport 23 schemes. The Nieuport 23 was almost identical to the Nieuport 17, and the kit provides for the slight differences; for example, the Lewis Gun emplacement is skewed to starboard. The instructions are clear and in color to enhance clarity, and also provide a schematic for the rigging. The photoetch parts are excellent. I have begun both kits and can testify that the photoetch pieces fit quite well. However, I would caution that some of the number call-outs for some of the photoetch parts appear incorrect. For example, the instructions call for PE26 and PE25 for the seatbelts but clearly this is wrong. In fact, the photoetch seatbelts are on the smaller sheet of photoetch, which contains beautiful pre-painted parts. In short, it was not difficult to tell the correct parts.

The decals look excellent and are as follows:

A. Adjutant Edmonde Thieffry, 5. Escradrille ‘Coete’, Belgium, summer 1917.

B. Russian Imperial Air Force, flown by Kibanov, October, 1917 – this has French markings, which were used by some Russian pilot.

C. N.3598, Lt. Boris ‘Bob’ Guber, Russian Imperial Air Force, Halic, fall, 1917 – this is the well-known ‘Bob’ marking, which apparently has been often misidentified as a Nieuport 17.

D. A further reincarnation of N.3598, Czechoslovakia, fall, 1919.

Conclusion

This looks like an excellent kit and thus far, my build is going fine. Highly recommended. Many thanks to Eduard for providing this sample kit.
