Starfighter Decals 1/72 F11C-2 BFC-2 Goshawks 1933-38

By Matt Bittner

This release from Starfighter covers the Monogram kit of the Curtiss F11C-2 as well as some markings for the BFC-2. To quote Starfighter "Markings included for the BFC-2 variant that was an upgrade of the F11C-2 airframe. Esoteric produced a conversion in the 1980, and hopefully I will bring one to market very soon." Let's hope it's very soon.

There are only two schemes for the F11C-2: 9363 ad 9282 of VF-1B U.S.S. Saratoga in 1933, the only squadron to fly the F11C-2 and only flew for a year as F11Cs. On the other hand there are four schemes for the BFC-2, the first three with U.S.S. Saratoga, and the last one with U.S.S. Enterprise: 9272 of VF-2B, 9333 of VF-3B, 9332 of VF-2B and finally 9338 of VB-6.

According to Starfighter, the BFC-2 "were conversions of F11C-2 into light bombers. Modified in the field with a kit from the Curtiss factory, a partial canopy and a new higher rear turtle deck to the rear fuselage was added. Esoteric issued a conversion in the 1980s, but is hard to find. I hope to have one for sale soon. The decals provided are designed to fit the kit as issued. If you decided to modify the fuselage, you will have to paint the section stripe."

As I mentioned in the Aircraft Insignia review, Starfighter's 1/72nd decals are now being printed by Cartograf. As with that set of decals, these are in register and the color is very well done. My huge thanks to Starfighter Decals for these decals.
