Testors “Hot Dogger Hangin’ Ten”

History
This is a painter’s kit. There are enough “big, blank canvases”
here for a person to have some real fun with. The kit is just loaded with
amusing little touches. You could paint it a single boring color, and
it would still exude goofy charm and an excess of personality, from any
angle.
I’ve seen some pretty cool finished examples of this kit -- and
of course, other figures or vehicles in the Weird-Ohs series. For example,
Randy
Koger’s version of this model on this site.
Weird-Ohs and Fink fans definitely owe it to themselves to check out
Cal’s collection
of those subjects.
THE PARTS
The pics tell most of the story. My 34 kit parts are shown off of their
sprues, because I picked up a used kit on eBay, cheaply; along with two
of the other Silly Surfers mini-series. (It’s all there; and unbuilt.
Good enough!)
The instructions have much the same personality as the kit, and should
enhance the building experience. Looks like they include some good tips
for less-experienced modelers.
What about fit problems? I did some test-fitting, and I’m not
overly concerned. I do expect to have to do a bit of work on seam filling:
it goes with the territory, when you’re dealing with injection molded
plastic figure kits. Nevertheless, I don’t expect it to be an ordeal.
My first impression is that there are a few minor high or low spots, along
the mating edges. Test-fit and sand the high spots (lightly!) and you
should have a pretty good-fitting model.
BACKGROUND
In the 1960s, Hawk Model Company put out three different lines of kits,
each of which had a theme: “Silly Surfers”; the “Frantics”
(1960s Rock and Roll youths); and “Weird-Ohs” (monsters driving
crazy cartoon cars, basically).
Reuben Klamer, Bob Allen and Mel Shaw designed the “Silly Surfers”
and “Frantics” lines. Bill Campbell designed the original
“Weird-Ohs” line. With the modern re-release of these kits,
the three lines have apparently fallen under the single “Weird-Ohs”
brand name.

THE VERDICT
All in all this looks to be an enjoyable experience. I’m looking
forward to spending some relaxing time with this.
