Eduard 1/72nd Jasta 5 Albatros D.V Dual Combo

Background
This is not going to be a typical First Look you would find on Internet
Modeler. Since the Eduard 1/72nd Albatros D.V/Va has been out for a number
of years, I will point you to the First
Look of the D.Va provided in February 2000, and then to Michael
Kendix's excellent full build review, in the February 2002 issue.
Those should answer any questions you have about this kit and what is
contained in the "regular" issue.
The Kit
This
"Dual Combo" kit consists of two complete Eduard 1/72nd Albatros
D.V/Va, a photoetch set for the major parts for both kits, as well as
a smaller, newer photoetch set containing colored seat belts and compass',
again for both models. In addition, you get a set of Eduard's "kabuki"
masks to help painting such things as the wheels, as well as other bits.
The place where this kit really shines is in the decals. These are excellently
printed and represents a small portion of the infamous Jasta 5 squadron.
There are markings for six separate and distinct aircraft:
- Richard Flashar and his dragon markings.
- Hans von Hippel and his "lightning bolt/arrow".
- Paul Baumer and his Edelweiss markings.
- Fritz Oppenhors and his red heart on a white background.
- An unknown D.V with a white horse marking on a red crest background.
- Another unknown D.V with a hammer and axe (?) marking, along with
a black and white oval.
Except
for Baumer's and Oppenhors' aircraft - finished with a natural fuselage
- all aircraft have a gray fuselage with green and mauve wings. Undersurfaces
are sky blue, and the tails are finished in Jasta 5 green with red outlines.
Thankfully Eduard provides those outlines as decals, making masking for
these unneccessary.
Conclusion
I think, with the current US price of $17.25 (found at Roll
Models), this set is a bargain. Even if your cup of tea isn't Jasta
5, with the two kits and two sets of photoetch, 17 bucks is a lot less
expensive then if you picked them up separately. Roll lists the D.Va Profipack
at US $11.25 each, so with two kits that would be $22.50. See, a bargain!
I do hope Eduard releases the seat belts and compass photoetch separately.
Having recently purchased their Junkers J.I non-profipack, I'm looking
for seat belts for it, and this new photoetch would be a great addition.
I definitely recommend this combo and everyone should buy at least one.
My thanks to Eduard for sending
the review sample. |
