MPM 1/72 Lockheed Vega - April 2004 Internet Modeler

By Jim Schubert

In my review of this second release of the Vega in the April issue (the first was in the October 2003 issue), I messed up on the sketch trying to show the mass balanced ailerons on some Vegas. Two drawings are included here in an attempt to redeem myself.

The cutout through the wing to accomodate the balance panel is not the same shape on both the top and bottom of the wing.

For All Vegas, the piano hinge on top makes a pretty smooth surface with no aileron-to-wing gap. After filling MPM'S aileron gap line, three parallel lines lightly scribed - about a scale inch apart with the middle one being on the old gap line - will do in 1/72. On the bottom a fairing strip was used to partially close the gap there. In 1/72, I believe that after filling the molded-in gap line, two lightly scribed lines, about a scale two inches apart straddling the - now filled - molded line, will do.

If your Vega has mass balanced ailerons, the above applies except where the balance panel is located. On the bottom, simply scribe the outline of the balance panel. On top, scribe the outline and carve a tapered gap to represent the cavity created by the skew of the top skin in front of the balance panel.

This is pretty hard to appreciate, so please study the drawings carefully. If you find that I have erred, please let me know.

Many thanks to Tim Kalina for his invaluable help in getting me to understand what I hope I have explained above. Thanks also to Chris and Bob for running this follow-up. I hate to leave errors hanging out there misleading people.

Camel Datafile Reprint

Recently reprinted is the Sopwith F.1 Camel Datafile. This is a 36 page monograph showing the development of the Sopwith Camel. In addition to numerous photos, there are the usual 1/48 and 1/72 scale drawings as well as three profiles on the rear cover. There is also a cutaway centrespread. The perfect compliment to the recent F.1 kits (The 2F1 was covered in Datafile No.6)
