MAC Models 1/72 SPAD VII C.1 US Volunteers

By Chris Banyai-Riepl

Overview

This is nothing more than a re-release of MAC's SPAD VII kit that came out a couple months ago, with just a decal change. Since we just reviewed the first release in January, I'll just provide a description of the decals offered in this release.

The Decals

Since this kit is labeled "US Volunteers," it obviously comes with USAS markings. There are a total of three options provided on the small decal sheet, two of which are USAS, with the third option being an RFC example. The two USAS examples are finished in standard French five-color camouflage, while the RFC example is finished in PC10 over CDL. The first USAS option is the boxtop example, being the mount of Captain William Thaw of the 103rd Aero Squadron in the Spring of 1918. The second USAS plane is 1st Lieutenant Paul Baer's aircraft, also from the 103rd Aero Squadron. This second option uses the same decals as Thaw's aircraft, with the instructions having you use just the indianhead emblem. The British example is very plain, with nothing more than a white serial on the tail and roundels in the usual six locations.

The decals are very nicely printed and are in perfect register, right down to the thin white outline around the British roundels.

Conclusion

This is a great model and this second release in a few months is very welcome. I hope that MAC continues to release great WWI subjects like this one.
