F-RSIN 1/144 Caravelle 11R Conversion The Airfix Caravelle is a good enough kit, but if you want to build a late Caravelle you were in for a fair bit of work. The JT-8D engine nacelles were the real challenge, but in addition to those the fuselage also had to be stretched, which meant sacrificing a second kit. F-RSIN has come to the rescue with a simple conversion set designed for the Airfix Caravelle. While labeled an 11R conversion, the parts can be used to make a Caravelle 10B, 10R, or 12. The instructions identify just what needs to be changed to do each of these variants. So what do you get in the conversion? First off, there's a pair of nice engines. Each side is cast as a single piece and is designed to replace the kit parts entirely, including the pylon molded onto the fuselage. That part of the conversion will be the simplest part. Next up is the fuselage stretch. Here is where things get fun. The instructions have you remove 25mm from one side, saving 6.5mm for the opposite side, completing the stretch. This seems an odd way to do things, but perhaps it was necessary to cast the included cabin floor. The cabin floor is included because the set also comes with the cargo door, allowing you to display your finished Caravelle with the cargo door open, if your plane had that door. Overall, while this conversion will require some careful cutting and fitting, it should not be too difficult a job and the end result greatly increases the number of liveries you can put on your Caravelle. | |
