When this volume landed on my model bench a few days ago, I had never given much thought to the history of Soviet aircraft of the Great Patriotic War. That has changed.

The book starts with a treatise of the VVS(Army Air Force) color systems including a detailed breakdown on colors, types of paints used, interior colors, and painting of various components.

The development and histories of various Soviet aircraft are described in the following chapters including coverage of the LaGG 3, La 5, La 5FN, La 7, Mig 1, Mig 3, Polikarpov I 15, I 152, I 153, I 16, Yak 1, Yak 3, Yak 7, and Yak 9, as well as coverage of various prototype aircraft.

Each chapter on the individual aircraft include numerous line drawings as well as full color plans detailing the various camouflage patterns that each aircraft were painted in, plus color profiles detailing specific aircraft. There are a large number of photos including many that have never before been published.

The book contains 5 appendices with information regarding specific prototype aircraft, national markings, pilots, and performance information.

The author is quick to point out the irregularities of the color systems used as well as a fascinating insight into the workings of the various state aviation factories which makes this book an interesting read.

If you have any interest in Soviet fighters then this could be the most comprehensive resource available. Highly recommended.
