Lift Here! 1/72 Early Birds I: Albatros & SPAD

By Chris Banyai-Riepl

Yugoslav aviation goes way back, as this decal sheet shows. This sheet has a total of six options, with enough roundels for the modeler to do two aircraft. There are three Albatros D.III Oeffag Series 253 aircraft and three SPAD S.VII aircraft. Starting with the Albatrosse, the first one is finished in standard wood and CDL and has simple markings: tricolors on the fin and blue/white/red roundels on the wings. The second one is finished in metallic gray, with a white stripe running down the fuselage. This one has the more familiar Yugoslav cross roundel on the wings. The final Albatros is finished in a three-color mottle over the wood fuselage and upper wing, with a skull & crossbones on a black field on the fuselage. The rudder is white, with a tricolor roundel. Roundels are repeated on the wings.

The SPADs are fairly similar. The first one is a standard SPAD S.VII C1, finished in metallic gray overall. The rudder is painted blue/white/red, with a number 23 in the white portion. The wings feature the later style of cross roundels. The other two SPAD VIIs are slightly modified, with a different windscreen, wire grille instead of louvers on the nose, and an additional tank under the nose. Both are overall medium green, with the only difference between the two being their numbers: 6 and 7.

The decals are well done and with separate roundel centers, the registration is perfect. These decals are a great break from the traditional French or Austro-Hungarian options found for SPAD and Oeffag Albatros kits.

My thanks to Lift Here for the review sample.
