AFV Club 1/35 German 10.5cm Howitzer Ammunition leFH 18 & Accessory set

By Ray Mehlberger

Last month I did a review of AFV Club's leFH 18 10.5cm German howitzer kit. I mentioned, at that time, that the kit did not include any ammo and that AFV Club was marketing the ammo as another kit. Well folks, I just bought that kit to compliment the howitzer.

This new kit comes in an end-opening type box. The box art depicts the various items in the kit in color and shows the howitzer's box art up in one corner. The rear of the box is the assembly instructions and a color listing chart, that calls out the paint colors to use in no less than five different brands. I am glad that they used the colors names and not just the numbers of the colors. Not everybody has a conversion table to tell them what these numbers mean, as far as the colors they equate to. Nice touch, this time, AFV Club!

The first thing one notices upon opening the box, is that AFV could have easily gotten away with a box half the length of this one. There is that much void in there.

There is one cello bag holding three identical dark green plastic trees of parts. Scotch taped, to the side of this cello bag, is a smaller cello holding the decal sheet.

Each parts tree holds 12 rounds of ammo (the ammo is a two part affair, with the war head and powder charges separate), you also get a wood slatted crate for each war head and six each of two different sizes of wood cases and metal canisters.

The decals provide black and white stencil markings for the wood cases, the metal canisters, and the sides of the ammo war heads. Unfortunately, my scanner will not pick up white lettering on a white background. Trust me people, the white markings ARE THERE!

The molding is top notch, with no flash evident and crisp molding.

Conclusion

The box art says that this ammo can be used not only for the leFH 18 howitzer, but also for the Wespe, the Sturmhaubitze 42, and stored in the side lockers of the Sd.Kfz. 11 half-track (which AFV sells three different kit versions of also).

I recommend this kit to compliment the leFH 18 howitzer. It is a good bargain for the price, with us getting 36 rounds in it.

Now if there was only a nice gun crew to go with it.
