Kitset 1/200 Boeing 727-100

By Al Superczynski

This tooling has been around the block a few times as I've seen the same kit from three or four different companies now, with the latest being this one out of New Zealand. There's no copyright anywhere on the parts or header card but I suspect it dates from the 1970s.

The model is molded in 24 white parts and includes a clear windshield. For as much use as this mold must have seen the parts are surprisingly flash-free and have minimal parting lines.

There's little detail - the only scribing is recessed lines for the control surfaces and passenger doors. There are no landing gear wells, the main wheel wells being indicated by further scribed lines while there's nothing at all to show the nose gear well. Indeed, there aren't even any nose gear doors and the nose landing gear itself consists of a strut with the wheels & tires molded on. The main gear is a bit better but still greatly simplified.

The very simple instructions suggest that there should be decals included but none of the four examples of this kit I have contain any in their factory-sealed bags. In view of the quality of the kit in general it's probably no great loss....

The model bears an uncanny resemblance to the larger Aurora kit, including the somewhat slab-sided fuselage, and I suspect that it was in fact largely based on it. It would build up as an okay in-flight display model but it's real value lies in the possibility of using the fuselage to convert the much better Hasegawa 727-200 kit. Recommended if one can be found at a reasonable price.
