Cutting Edge Resin Details

by Michael Benolkin

The folks at Meteor Productions have been busy again. They continue to turn out great aftermarket detail parts and sets to compliment many of the latest kit releases as well as dress up many of the 'classic' kits. This latest batch definitely addresses the new and old kits nicely. Let's take a look:

CEC32116 - 1/32 X-1E Resin Conversion

MSRP: $29.99 - Recommended Kit: Revell 1/32 X-1

Here is a fascinating conversion - new wings, strakes and canopy section for the Revell Bell X-1 to create the later (and faster) Bell X-1E. If you've watched the movie 'Right Stuff', this is the airplane that Chuck Yeager spun while pushing the envelope and cracked open the canopy with his helmet. Cutting Edge is also releasing decals for this version as well.

CELO72001 Space Shuttle Engine Nozzles

MSRP: $14.99 - Recommended Kit: Monogram/Revell 1/72 Shuttle

This is an instant improvement on the kit's engine bells. While the original kit main engine bells had some nice detail, they also had seamlines that were difficult to eliminate. Ditto on the two OMS engine bells. This set replaces the Orbiter's three main engine bells and the two OMS engine bells as well.

CELO72002 - Columbia Fin Camera

MSRP: $3.99 - Recommended Kit: Monogram/Revell 1/72 Shuttle

This is a replacement fin tip for the Monogram or Revell 1/72 Shuttle kits. The leading edge of this tip housed a camera that recorded the super-heated plasma that streaked back from the wing roots as the Shuttle decelerated at high speed and high angles of attack as it descended into denser atmosphere from orbit. Columbia was the only orbiter to receive this modification to date.

As always, it is fascinating to see what is coming next from the talented group of mold makers at Cutting Edge. It is also refreshing to see their continued commitment to support old and new kits alike! You can obtain your Cutting Edge detail sets directly from Meteor Productions.

My sincere thanks to Meteor Productions for these review samples!
