Lindberg 1/48 scale Convair XFY-1 "Pogo", kit #526

By Sebastiano Tringali

Our look into the past this month comes to us by way of one of our international readers from Italy:

"The Lindberg 1/48 "Pogo" kit was firt issued in 1956 as kit number 526, the box contained 23 injection moulded parts in silver-gray plastic with a clear canopy part, intruction sheet and decals for the only aircraft built. The kit was updated in 1987 adding the board ladder and new decals, increasing to 32 the number of the parts.

From the first look the kit appears according to the style of the age; raised pannel lines, heavy raised rivets, no cockpit details, but at the same time, simple and easy to build, all the parts fit well without excessive problems.

The general quality is good and this kit could naturally be compared with some modern short-run kits, but without photoetched or resin parts. It's a good base for starting to built an accurate enough model of the "Pogo" if you detail the cockpit from the spare boxes; also for now it is 'the only game in town' if you want a 1/48 'Pogo'.

I have bought a copy of the "Naval Fighters number 27 "Convair XFY-1 Pogo" and now I will begin to build this "oldie but goodie" kit to increase my collection of X and strange planes!!!"

This kit is a perfect example of the oldies I discussed a few months ago that are still widely available, being identical to the original release other than the addition of the boarding ladder and improved decals. Thanks for the 'loan' of your kit, Sebastiano, and for making it so easy for me to write my column this month!
