Schnellboot in Action By T. Garth Connelly & David L. Krakow Squadron Signal Publications, 2003 ISBN 0-89747-457-0, 58 pages | | In this latest installment of the Warships in Action series, the authors provide us with a very nicely detailed and illustrated history of the 'Schnellboot' (Fast Boat) in German WWII service. The Schnellboot is the North Sea and English Channel equivalent of the US PT Boats used in the Pacific theater, though the later Schnellboots were larger than their US equivalents. Coverage of the subject begins with the early gun boats developed during the first world war. After the war, designer Otto Lurssen developed the first of the S-Boats and employed some unique hydrodynamic engineering to achieve better speeds and stability out of the hulls. The title explains the development history of the series from the S-1 to the S-100-class of Schnellboots. Next, the authors run through the various subsystems and features of the S-Boats, including nice photography to round out the internal and external details of this versatile family of combat vessels. This title is recommended for modelers and naval historians alike! You can find a copy of this title at your local book store, hobby shop or directly from the Squadron Mail Order (www.squadron.com) website. | |
