When Hawaiian Airlines decided to replace its aging fleet of DC-10s with 767s, many people wondered if they would carry a new livery or keep the old. This question was laid to rest with the rollout of the first Hawaiian 767, resplendent in a very striking scheme consisting of several shades of purple with a Hawaiian woman rising up in profile on the tail, complete with the traditional flower in her hair. I had the distinct joy of being one of the first people to see this livery on the 767 when the first one showed up at Paine Field. Seeing this livery in full color up close made me certain that I wanted to build a model in this scheme, but two things held me back. The first problem was the fact that there was no decal sheet for the livery and the second was tracking down the long out of production Revell 1/144 767 kit. Well I now have the sheet so it’s time to start hunting down that elusive kit.
Back to the sheet, what can I say but WOW! This is a very well done sheet that jumps out at you with the vibrant colors of the livery. The basic livery is split into four main parts. The vertical tail is covered completely with decal, with the largest piece including the woman’s face. The flower is provided separately, allowing for perfect alignment. The other large decal pieces make up the purple petals on the rear fuselage. These two decal pieces will probably be the most difficult ones to apply, as these have to fit around the tapering rear fuselage. I would recommend applying the tail pieces first, then applying the fuselage pieces, lining up the white parts on top and working them around the bottom.
In addition to the large areas of color on the back end of the plane, you also get the Hawaiian text for the front of the fuselage as well as all the names for both the current operating fleet as well as the upcoming deliveries. A complete set of registration codes and fleet numbers are also included, as well as the US and Hawaiian flags. A set of window decals and door outlines provide the last details on this sheet, while five swatches of color round out the sheet.
This is one sheet that is worth every penny. If you have a spare 767 sitting in your closet, well, first give it to me! But if you want to build it, this sheet is one that will result in a very nice looking model.
My thanks to Flying Colors for the review sample. Check out their website for other great liveries in several scales.
