Airliner Tech Series Volume 10 By Robert F. Dorr Specialty Press, 2002 ISBN 1-58007-055-8 104 Pages, Softbound $16.95
Following on from the earlier volume on the 747-100/200/300, this title covers the latest and most modern 747, the –400. While for the most part appearing like a slightly different 747, this plane actually could be considered a whole new aircraft. From the visible differences such as the wingtips and extended fuselage hump to the less seen changes such as the glass cockpit and cabin modifications, this book covers it all in typical Airliner Tech fashion.
This book reads quite well and does an excellent job of describing the differences between the early 747s and the 747-400, while the photos and drawings provide plenty of details for the modeler. In addition to mechanical details there also is a complete reference of every 747-400 built to date, listing the type, the registration, the operator, the line/msn, and the date delivered. While the majority of the photos are in black and white, there is a central color section showcasing many of the more colorful and striking liveries worn by this huge aircraft.
For those of you who want to detail out that Revell or Hasegawa 747-400 kit, this is an excellent reference to have. Even if you’re just interested in having something on the largest airliner in history (so far), this is one book that you can’t pass up.
