Alpha Precision Abrasives Abrasive Cleaning Disc
By Matt Bittner
There comes a point in a modeler's life where he or she will acquire so much "stuff" it will be difficult to wade through it all. Naturally this includes the tools one uses daily. We all try "the latest and greatest" tool, hoping that one will help cut down the amount of time spent on modeling.
This isn't that tool. It won't help you cut down on the amount of time spent on the bench. However, what it will do is extend the life of some of your tools. I know I'm one to throw away a sanding stick when I think it's too clogged to use, and nothing I used (before this point) worked. So, into the trash bin it went.
Now I use the Abrasive Cleaning Disc from Alpha Precision Abrasives. If you keep on top of your "abrasive" cleaning, then you'll throw away sanding sticks with a lot less frequency. But don't just use it on sanding sticks. It will also work with regular sand paper, files, and the other "latest and greatest" tool I'm now using, the stepSanders. Just rub the Cleaning Disc across the sanding surface, and with the right amount of pressure and rubbing from different sides, your sanding surface should become unclogged. Unfortunately it won't work if there is hardened paint in the surface.
Think of the Disc as an eraser (like that at the top of pencils) and using the same motion and pressure you use on a pencil, will "erase" the clog. Hmmm, that almost sounds like a commercial. You can see in the image just how the Disc looks after multiple uses. Looks just like a used eraser.
