Starfighter Decals 1/72 Curtiss P-6E Hawk U.S.A.A.C. Pt. 3
By Matt Bittner
I really appreciate one of the niches Starfighter Decals cater to, between-the-wars aircraft. If it wasn't for them we wouldn't have excellent choices for some of the more venerable 'tweener aircraft models available. For example, the Monogram Curtiss P-6E has been around since 1968, can easily still be found in the used-kit market and was re-released at one time by Accurate Miniatures before they folded. Not only does Starfighter Decals provide a "part 2" set of decals for this model but they also have a resin cockpit set and a set of photoetch rigging.
For this set of decals Starfighter Decals sets their sites on the famous (infamous?) "Snow Owls" of the 17th Pursuit Squadron (PS). Thankfully not all of them have the "owl" legs on the landing gear and spats as one is finished with just black landing gear. The aircraft covered are:
- P-6E, 32-268, 17th PS, Lt. G.F. Schlatter, Selfridge Field, MI
- P-6E, 32-274, 17th PS, Selfridge Field, MI
- P-6E, 32-264, 17th PS, Selfridge Field, MI (this is the aircraft without the "owl legs")
In one of my reviews I stated I would never finish a model as a 17th PS bird since most modelers finish their P-6Es as 17th PS aircraft; well, that was true until this set was released that contained a 17th bird without the "owl legs". So I think I may have to rescind that remark as I'm working on a Monogram kit and will probably finish it as 32-264.
Huge, huge thanks for Starfighter Decals not only releasing this set of P-6E decals but also for catering to the 'tweener modeler.
