By Jacob Russell
Here's another is brand new 1/48th scale decal sheet from Exito Decals that covers 3 Messerschmitt Bf109s in Eastern Front service. All 3 are very colorful and interesting aircraft. They are as follows:
"White 2", Bf109E-7, flown by Lt. Heinrich Ehrler, 4./JG 5, Alakurtti, Finland, late April 1942. This Emil was painted in the mid War Luftwaffe camouflage colors of the RLM 74 and 75 Greys over RLM 76 Light Blue. The cowl and lower wing tips were RLM 04 Yellow and the spinner was RLM 70 with a white tip. The fuselage sides carried a dense RLM 74/75 mottle and the white areas of the fuselage national insignias were overpainted with the mottle.
Bf109F-4 trop, Werknummer 10266, flown by Major Gordon Golub, Kommodore of JG 77, Oktoberfeld, Crimea, Soviet Union June, 1942. This plane was one of several F-4 trops in service on the Eastern Front. It was painted in the Tropical Theatre colors of RLM 79 Brown over 78 Light Blue with a RLM 70 spinner with a white quarter, RLM 04 Yellow lower cowl, wing tips and fuselage band. The fuselage and upper wings were over painted with meandering bands of RLM 70. The starboard tailplane was a replacement painted in RLM 74/75 over 76.
"White 10", Bf109G-6, flown by Oblt. Robert "Bazi" Weiβ, Kapitän of 10./JG 54, Alakurtti, Finland, late April 1942. This G-6 Kanonboote was painted in the mid War Luftwaffe camouflage colors of RLM 74/75/76 with RLM 04 Yellow fuselage band, rudder, lower wing tips and cowl. The upper surfaces were loosely over painted with white RLM 21 winter distemper paint. The RLM 76 extended over the wing leading edges with a wavy, "scallop" pattern. The spinner was black with a thin white spiral, the backing plate was RLM 70 Dark Green and white and the landing gear doors were removed.
Cartograph of Italy printed the decals and they are top quality with tight registration. They are brightly colored and crisply printed with legible stencils. The decals come with a 2-sided color profile for each plane, with period photographs and a guide to applying the decals plus color callouts for AK Interactive and GSI Creos Mr. Hobby paints.
This is a first class product. All 3 planes are colorful and interesting. I like that Exito caters to the 3 main Bf109 variants. If you're looking for some markings for your next Messerschmitt Bf109E, F and G you here are some options worth considering. I recommend these decals and I would like to thank Exito Decals for the review samples.
