Eduard 1/72 Nieuport 17 Aftermarket
By Matt Bittner
Overview
The Eduard 1/72 Nieuport 17 is the best model of that aircraft in that scale. You can make it not only into a Nie.17 but a Nie.21 as well as a Nie.23. With the recent release of another Weekend Edition Nie.17, Eduard has also released aftermarket for it.
The Aftermarket
The masks Eduard provides consist of not only masks for the kit's clear windscreen, but also masks for the wheels. The fact they include masks for the wheels is reason enough to purchase the set.
The photoetch set consists of 44 pieces of etch. The main difference between this newer release and the older release is some of the parts - the seat, seat belts and one of the windscreen frames - are pre-painted. Take care to not rub that away when assembling, though.
Parts included in this set include a new, fold-up seat; seat belts; two sets of rudder pedals (just in case) which needs the molded-on pedals removed; photoetch cockpit sides again, removing the molded-in detail; a bar that goes between the sides; the blip-switch throttle, along with the framing it attaches to; replacement foot step plate; items for the upper wing; two different cockpit levers for the gun; a muzzle protector; a bracket to hold the front of the gun to the fuselage; a wrap-around addition to the plastic headrest area; four separate and different windscreen frames; and finally wiring for the engine.
Conclusion
Use both sets to not only add detail to your 1/72 Nie.17 but also to speed up the painting process by using the masks. All in all I consider both good values for the money.
Many thanks to Eduard for providing the sets to review.
