Eduard 1/48 Bf109G-6 Photo Etch
By Jacob Russell
This photo etch set is for Zvezda's new 1/48th scale Messerschmitt Bf109G-6 kit. It consists of 67 parts on 2 frets, one of which is pre-painted. Eduard has made some changes to their photo etch sets, and these changes are worth mentioning.
The first thing I noticed is that the color fret is no longer self adhesive. The second thing I observed is that seat belts are not included. They're available in another set (49832). Perhaps this is because Zvezda includes a pilot figure. He's a pretty good looking pilot, but what if you pass on using him, and toss "Heinrich" in the spares box?!
The color fret includes upgrades such as a new instrument panel, oxygen regulator face, sidewall consoles, and chains to the landing gear retraction wheels. The unpainted fret includes, brake lines, spark plug wires, rudder pedals, exhaust shrouds, a mesh cover for the supercharger, wing radiator flaps, windscreen grab handles, canopy release, etc. The detail on all of these parts is outstanding.
This set comes with Eduard's customary well illustrated instructions. They are easy to follow. I'll make my usual recommendations about using your preferred magnification device, good photo etch scissors, and that you remove the parts from the fret with the fret inside a plastic bag. Some of the parts are tiny and you're unlikely to see them again if they go flying.
Zvezda's new Bf109G-6 kit is pretty good. It is accurate and well detailed, albeit facing some stiff competition from Eduard's own new Gustav kit and the new Tamiya G-6. But competition improves the breed! Eduard's p/e set adds some useful detail. I would still prefer that seat belts be included rather than having to purchase them separately. I recommend this set and I would like to thank Eduard for the review sample.
