Afterburner Decals 1/48 Ferris Phantoms
By Frank Anselmo
Another of the new releases from Afterburner Decals is sheet 48-051, Ferris Phantoms. The sheet comes on the heels of the recently released 1/48 F-4S kit by Hasegawa, and features six aircraft from five squadrons who used the wicked splintered Ferris/Heater paint scheme on their aircraft in the early 1980s.
The aircraft featured on this sheet are as follows:
F-4S, 153814, 1985 VMFA-321, MG/04
F-4S, 153904, 1984 VF-202, AF/211
F-4S, 155531, 1985 VMFA-112, MA/04
F-4S, 153832, 1983 VF-302, ND/203
F-4S, 153882, 1983 VF-302, ND/203
F-4S, 155749, 1984 VF-301, ND/110
There are sufficient markings and stencils to complete two of these aircraft models in this set.
The main decal sheet in this set includes the main unit markings, national insignia, intake warnings, wingwalks, and other individual aircraft markings. A smaller sheet is also included and it contains the false canopy for F-4S, 155749 in 1983, as well as “slime lights” for the fuselage and tail.
Also included in this set are a complete set of color instructions detailing the unique splinter camouflage of these aircraft. There are side views of each aircraft, along with both top and bottom views of the aircraft. The instructions also detail the FS colors involved here as well
The decals on this sheet have been printed by Cartograf. They are very thin, have minimal carrier film, and are in perfect register. All of this is contained in a zip poly bag.
This and all other Afterburner Decals can be ordered directly from their site: https://www.afterburnerdecals.com/.
My thanks to Scott Brown of Afterburner Decals for providing this sample sheet.
