Dragon 1/72 Churchhill Mk.IV NA 75
By Matt Bittner
Introduction
Designed as the replacement for the Matilda II and Valentine tanks, the Churchill heavy tank started out a bit weak with poor performance. A strong showing during the Second Battle of El Alamein proved the type, and the Churchill went on to remain a major vehicle in British forces for well into the post-war era. During that long lifespan the Churchill underwent many modifications and improvements, resulting in lots of variant designations and with that, confusion for those trying to keep them straight.
The Kit
Dragon's 1/72 Churchhill Mk.IV NA 75 consists of 71 pieces of gray, injected plastic and two DS tracks. There are decals for three machines, two unidentified from Italy in 1944 and the third from 'C' Sqd, North Irish Horse, Italy, 1944. All three are finished in "green" and the decals appear to be in register.
This model shouldn't take long to assemble; where it will probably slow down is in how you weather it. Construction first states with gluing the turret together, adding all pieces until complete. The second instruction step is gluing the lower hull together, including the two-piece (for each side) running gear. The wheel assembly is separate from the spring assembly, and once all together then that is glued to the lower hull. The only other separate pieces are the drive sprockets and idler wheel. Plus you'll need to add the front glacis to the assembly as well.
The third step is gluing the upper hull – and its pieces – to the lower hull, but not until you add the tracks. While I'm uncertain, it doesn't appear you'll be able to add the tracks after the hull pieces are brought together. That last step is adding the last items to the completed tank.
Conclusion
This shouldn't be a difficult/long build so use it as both an AMS-buster and for weathering practice. It's a very nicely done kit and will look great when finished.
My thanks to Dragon Models USA for sending the review kit.
