1/48 Pro Modeler Ju 88A-4
by Will Riepl

If you haven't heard already, this kit is actually the old DML kit, with all the proper parts needed to do a Ju88A. In the box, it looks incredible. Plenty of clear parts are in the kit, including 2 extra single gun canopies which provide the two gun blisters for the two gun one. The surface detail is typical of the DML kits and the latest Pro Modeler line, with finely recessed panel lines throughout. In doing a quick dry fit I discovered one shortcoming: there are no locator pegs and holes on the fuselage. While this may not be too important to many modelers, it does make dry fitting a chore. In checking the kit with the plethora of plans out there, the kit seems to scale out well, although there has been some confusion on the rec.models.scale newsgroup about the accuracy of the tail. According to my eye looking at photographs and the kit, the kit looks right to me, but I'll leave the final decision to those with the micrometers. Considering your other choice is the old AMT kit, you'd best count your blessings. I actually dug the AMT kit out to see if I could use the spinners off of it, as the ones in the kit are the later, more pointed type. But there is absolutely nothing whatsoever useful about the AMT kit, including the spinners. I guess we will just have to either wait for the resin companies to come out with a set or modify the kit ones.

The decal sheet provides options for four Ju88A-4s; a Ju 88 A-4 of 3./KG 54, a Ju 88 A-4 of 2./LG. 1, a Ju 88 A-4 of Stab III ./KG 3, and a Ju 88 A-4 of 9./ KG 51. With Dragon coming out with the Ju88C in 1/48, all that will be left for the Ju88 series will be the ones with the rounded glass nose like the S variant. I guess it's time to put up another shelf in the old modeling den....
