The Sd.Kfz 7 was developed as a prime mover mainly for the 88 Flak and 15cm field Howitzer. It appeared first in 1938 and dated back to a 1934 requirement for an 8ton prime mover. During the war it was apparent that there was an increased need for mobile AA-guns. So in the process a number of Sd.Kfz 7’s were converted to mobile AA Platforms mainly for the 2cm and 3.7 AA-guns. Some of these vehicles were later fitted with an armored cab, which is represented in this kit.
The Kit
This is another very nice molded kit in Dragon’s Smart kit line. In the box you will find 10 light gray sprues (made up from 3 different kits), 1 clear sprue, the chassis frame, 3 DS tan plastic tires, 2 PE frets, 2 bags of magic tracks, a decal sheet for total of around 550 parts.
As we have come to expect from Dragon, the parts are very nicely molded with a high level of detail. The parts are clear of any visible flash and mold lines. Ejector pin marks are hidden or on separate parts of the sprue. Since this kit is made up of sprues from 3 different kits you will have parts left over for the spare box.
The vehicles can be build in either transport or firing position. There are no PE parts for the gun except the crosshairs. One of the PE-Frets included in this kit are for mesh sidewalls for the trucks cargo compartment but they are neither shown in the parts map nor in the instructions.
The paint instructions show options for 6 different vehicles for either the Eastern Front or France. One of the schemes is for a vehicle of the 2. Pz.Div , France 1944 The other schemes are for unknown units.
The decals allow for customization of the license plates for either SS of Luftwaffe vehicles.
Conclusion
Again another great offering from Dragon that would look nice in any armor collection. It is well molded and highly detailed. Due to the complexity of the kit, some experience with armor models is needed. I would like to thank Dragon USA for this review kit.
