CGD 1/144 WWII German 60cm Flakscheinwerfer
By Matt Bittner
Introduction
Combat Group Dynamix has an extensive selection of 1/144 armor. I covered how they create their models in my First Look of the German WWII sWs half-track truck, so be sure to read that for more information
The Kit
CGD's 1/144 Flak-SW 36 consists of five pieces. The trailer - with an extra "extension" containing the hitches that need to be glued to the sWs (two hitches, I'm guessing for "just in case") - the light, and the generator. Although you must cut the extension away that contains the hitches, whether you use the hitches or not depends on how you plan on displaying the Flak-SW 36.
As with the sWs the parts are pre-painted with highlights. You might want to do some more weathering, for example a good, dark wash could help pop out some of the details. Since the light itself is just a painted round of dark silver, you might want to enhance this area. Although I think it would be great if there was some way you could physically light this up (via an LED or a grain-bulb), maybe even drilling it out, putting in a model railroad MV lens, and providing an actual "glass" cover could be better than just a painted round of dark silver. Ihaven't decided how I'm going to dress up the light, probably the latter way with the MV lens. Conclusion
If you're looking for a Flak-SW 36 just for war gaming purposes, then out of the box the CGD 1/144 kit is a great way to go. If you want something more for a diorama or display, then you might want to dress up the lens area. Either way the CGD Flak-SW 36 is an excellent piece to pick up.
Many thanks to CGD for supplying the review searchlight.
