F-102-style (J57-23 A/B) Afterburner Can

A great many F-100s, as they were passed to the Air National Guard,
were outfitted with the afterburner of the F-102. The type’s original
afterburner had troubles with the various segments of the divergent nozzles
opening at different rates when the afterburner was engaged, resulting
in a moment of ahead-of-its-time and totally uncontrollable vectored thrust.
As the F-102 was retired, an air national guard NCO suggested that the
F-102 afterburner nozzle – with its actuator-controlled segments
– be installed on the F-100. This solved the problem and became
a standard feature on F-100s in ANG service, on foreign Huns and those
used by civilian operators.
This
set, intended for the Trumpeter F-100D, includes 11 parts – the
inner and outer segments of the afterburner, the back section of the tailpipe,
and eight actuators. The parts are cast very well, with no surface imperfections
and just a little flash. Alignment marks help get the inner nozzle situated
inside the outer nozzle, a very smart feature. The set requires the builder
to remove the back part of the four parts that make up the Trumpeter kit’s
tailpipe and burner section.
The only fiddly bit of construction is the eight very small actuators.
There are eight in the set; it would have been nice to provide some extras
in the inevitable case of tweezer-launch. These parts come in the own
package to protect them during shipment.
If you’re doing a late-period F-100, especially an ANG Super Sabre,
this set is a must. They’re available from their
website.
