Afterburner Decals 1/48 VFA-37 F/A-18C "Ragin' Bulls"

By Frank Anselmo

One of the newest releases from the team of guys at Afterburner Decals has been sent to us and it is called “RAGIN’ BULLS”, F/A-18C VFA-37 OIF 2006 – 2008. This is sheet AD48-035. The package includes a large 8 x 10 inch sheet which includes all the main markings along with stencils, along with a smaller sheet which contains various other markings. The instruction sheets are contained on three large full color double sided sheets, along with a with a Weapons and Stores sheet. All of the aircraft presented on this sheet are in the Standard Tactical Paint Scheme of FS 36320 Dark Ghost Gray on the topside of the aircraft, and FS 36375 Light Ghost Gray on the bottom.

This decal sheet provides markings for these aircraft:

F/A-18C, 165181, modex 300, 2003 CAG during OIF in 2003. It features a blue trim on the top of its vertical tail as well as the leading edges of the tail. These markings are provided on the decal sheet. The remaining markings and stencils for this aircraft are blue as well.

F/A-18C, 165177, modex 301, 2003 CO during OIF in 2003. The markings for this aircraft are nearly the same as the above, only this time they are in red. The “bull” on the vertical tail of this aircraft is an angry snorting bull. The modex and “VFA-37” are red with black shadows.

F/A-18C, 165183, modex 302, 2003 XO during OIF in 2003. The markings for this aircraft are very plain, and are in gray and black.

F/A-18C, 165176, modex 300, 2008 CAG. These are the current markings for the CAG aircraft of VFA-37, and feature a large blue area on the top of the aircraft and on both the inside and outside of the vertical tails. The markings for this aircraft are white on the blue areas, and the stenciling is all blue. Since this aircraft is stationed on the aircraft carrier USS Harry Truman, the airflow deflectors on the top of the fuselage feature the former President’s famous saying: “Give ‘em Hell”. The “VFA-37” on the fuselage side has been replaced with “RAGIN’ BULLS”.

F/A-18C, 165177, Modex 300, 2007 CAG. 2007 was the 40th Anniversary of VFA-37, and includes a banner on the outsides of vertical tails. The markings for this aircraft are red along with all the stenciling. Again, an angry snorting bull is featured on the tails. “VFA-37” on the fuselage side has been replaced with “RAGIN’ BULLS”.

F/A-18C, 165196, modex 303, 2007 Line Jet. Standard gray markings are featured on this aircraft along with the banner celebrating the 40th Anniversary.

F/A-18C, 165203, modex 307, 2007 Line Jet. Standard gray markings are featured. The Anniversary banner on this aircraft is a lighter gray than the above line jet.

F/A-18C, 165181, modex 300, 2006 CAG. The markings for this aircraft are blue, and are all represented by decals including the vertical tail tops and the leading edges of the tails.

F/A-18C, 165177, modex 301, 2006 CO. Markings are nearly the same as the above aircraft but are in red. And the “snorting bull” is on the tail again. Instead of “VFA-37” on the fuselage side, it has been replaced with “RAGIN’ BULLS”.

This decal package also contains a very detailed Weapons and Stores sheet so that you can arm your Hornet for various missions.

The decals themselves are designed to fit the Hasegawa line of “Legacy” Hornet kits; but, with minor trimming, fitting them to other kits should not be much of a problem. The decals themselves have been printed by Cartograf and are in excellent register with a minimum of film around each design. You can build two complete aircraft kits from this sheet. And as is the custom at Afterburner Decals, the instruction sheets are second to none: they are the industry leader.

Whether you are into colorful markings for your Hornet, or standard line jets, this sheet contains something for everyone, and is highly recommended. It can be ordered directly from Afterburner Decals on their website.

My thanks to Scott Brown at Afterburner Decals for this sample decal package.
