UMM-USA 3Detail Riveter Tool

By Chris Banyai-Riepl

Continuing to expand their tool line, the latest exciting tool from UMM-USA is their riveter tool, available in several sizes. This is a simple tool on the surface, just a handle with a pounce wheel at one end. As with many things, it is surprising how a simple item can become so useful.

The basic operation is, well, basic. Just run the tool along the rivet line with a bit of pressure and you get a nice line of recessed rivets. The different scales present different spacing for the rivets, and by using them all on a kit, you can get an interesting effect of tightly riveted panels and loosely riveted panels. In doing some quick tests, I found that laying a piece of thick tape (like Dymo label tape) to use as a straight edge works quite well. For curves, simply cut the tape to the shape and pivot the riveter tool.

The finishing is quite surprising. I figured that I would need to sand down raised edges after pressing into the plastic, but that is not the case with this tool. Once you’ve drawn your rivet line, there is no other steps required. The plastic is smooth in between the rivets, making this a great tool for a final step before painting. My thanks to UMM-USA for the review sample.
