Yellow-Wings Decals 1/72 USN SOC-3 Seagull Part-1 #72013

By Matt Bittner

Yellow-Wings continues their coverage of US Navy 'tweeners with this release for the Hasegawa Curtiss SOC-3. both land and float plane. This release covers the following squadrons: VO-1, VO-2, VO-3, VO-4, VCS-9 and VMS-2. Specifically it covers the following aircraft:

  • "1-O-7", USN VO-1, USS Arizona BB-39, USS Nevada BB-36, USS Pennsylvania BB-38, 1937-1938

  • "2-O-1", USN VO-2, USS Tennessee BB-43, USS Oklahoma BB-37, USS California BB-44, 1937-1938

  • "3-O-4", USN VO-3, USS Idaho BB-42, USS Mississippi BB-41, USS New Mexico BB-40, 1937-1938

  • "4-O-2", USN VO-4, USS West Virgnia BB-48, USS Colorado BB-45, USS Maryland BB-46, 1937-1938

  • "2-MS-7", USMC VMS-2, San Diego, 1938-1939. The only land-plane within the set

  • "9-CD-1", USN VCS-9, USS Honolulu, 1940-1941

The very first sheet of instructions is two-sided and covers the general practices of US Navy colors and colorization, including paint matches. An excellent piece by itself.

The rest of the instructions cover the aircraft specifics. One 8.5x11 piece of paper per aircraft which covers a lot of details. However, I don't like that there isn't any color to the instruction sheet. Sure, all SOC-3s on this collection are finished in the standard for the day - light gray for the metal areas, fabric areas aluminum dope and the top of the upper wing in yellow - but still, it would be nice to see how all the decals look on the instruction sheet in color. Will this ruin my day and make me not want or purchase Yellow-Wings decals? Of course not. Just a "nice-to-have".

The decals are very nicely done and with them being printed by Microsoft you can practically guarantee good colors and excellent registration. Which these have both. There are two errata sheets included as well. The first is for the green chevrons on "9-CD-1" and the second contains the ships' names that weren't printed on the main sheet.

Our thanks to Yellow-Wings for the review samples.
